Picking our first chardonnay of the season at X-Omni Vineyard! This site is fascinating—it’s more than 20 clones co-planted in the same block. Each clone contributes different flavors and qualities, creating a sparkling wine that radiates freshness and complexity. Our first release from this site will be available in 2021. Stay tuned! 🥂
It’s that most fun day in the winery: foot stomping day! This is us dancing around on two tons of pinot noir from @moemomtazi’s vineyard. These grapes have spent the last nine days in carbonic fermentation, where we leave the clusters whole and let the juice start fermenting inside the berries. Today we stomped it to get a little more juice contact with the skins, which will give the wine a gorgeous intense pink hue. 😍
Beautiful day for our first pick of #harvest2019 at Momtazi Vineyard. We brought in 2 tons of mixed clone pinot noir 🍇🍇 from a block called the Pinot Patch. We’re doing carbonic fermentation for this wine, so the bins will spend the next six or so days covered tightly in plastic wrap while the grapes ferment inside their skins. This process helps the wine develop beautiful notes of fresh strawberry and candied orange peel, as well as a gorgeous deep pink color. Can’t wait to see it evolve over the next three years! 🥂
One of the things that fascinates us is field blends. The intermixed varieties and clones add an additional dimension to the terroir. Tomorrow we’re picking the “Pinot Patch” at Momtazi Vineyard which is different clones which were accidentally intermixed - including what appears to be a few vines of Pinot Gris. Here you can see the stark differences in coloring side by side.
We’re taking advantage of this stunning Sunday afternoon in the Willamette Valley to taste at @holloranvineyardwines in the Dundee Hills. If you’re heading this way, don’t miss their exquisite old vine chardonnay, pinot noir, and riesling. And lest you think the Willamette Valley is all pinot all the time, there’s even a delightfully light and silky tempranillo(!) in the mix!🍷
